Asian Individual Chess Championships 2026
The 2026 Asian Chess Championship kicks off in Ulaanbaatar: the main things to know about the continent's main battle
Today, May 29, 2026, the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, becomes the epicenter of chess life on the Asian continent. The first round of the Asian Individual Chess Championship 2026 (the 21st men's and 27th women's championships) has officially started. The tournament will last until June 6 and will host the strongest thinkers of the region, which is currently dictating trends in world chess.
Why is this tournament critically important?
The Asian Continental Championship is not just a fight for a prestigious title and a solid prize fund, which this year amounts to $100,000. It is, above all, a direct bridge to the world chess elite.
Based on the results of 9 rounds of fierce confrontations, the holders of direct licenses for the highest-level tournaments will be determined:
-
In the Open tournament: The top 5 best chess players will receive tickets to the FIDE World Cup 2027.
-
In the women's tournament: The winner guarantees a place in the FIDE Women's World Cup 2027.
Given that the Asian chess school (in particular, representatives of India, China, Uzbekistan and Vietnam) is currently experiencing a colossal rise, the density of results and the tension in each game will be maximum.
Competition regulations and format
The tournament is hosted by the comfortable Bayangol Hotel in Ulaanbaatar. The competition is held according to the classic rules:
-
System: Swiss, 9 rounds.
-
Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes are added until the end of the game. There is also a Fischer addition of 30 seconds for each move made, starting from the first.
-
Participants: The list of favorites and seeded players includes famous grandmasters, including Yu Yangyi, Alexei Grebnev, Aditya Mittal and Xu Zhihang.
What's at stake?
In addition to the World Cup passes, the top ten chess players will share prize money. Asia's leadership in the world rankings makes this championship more difficult than many international opens, as there are virtually no passing opponents here from the second or third round.
