This spring, the eyes of the entire chess world will be fixed on the Polish city of Katowice. The European Individual Chess Championship (EICC) 2026 is not just another tournament, but the most prestigious individual championship on the continent, where the strongest chess player in Europe is determined and tickets to the FIDE World Cup are played.
Historical background
The European Men's Chess Championship (Open Category) has been held annually since 2000 under the auspices of the European Chess Union (ECU). During this time, the tournament has become a major platform for young talents and experienced grandmasters. In different years, legends such as Pavlo Elyanov (Ukraine), Vasyl Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Jan Nepomniachtchi and Magnus Carlsen (in team events and rapid) have become champions. Katowice has already hosted major chess events, and the choice of this city for 2026 symbolically coincides with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Polish Chess Federation.
