While the Christian world prepares for Easter, the Spanish town of San Vicente del Raspeig becomes the epicenter of intellectual battles. The anniversary, tenth international open chess tournament Semana Santa (Holy Week) once again brings together masters and amateurs under the warm sun of the province of Alicante.
Historical Reference
The Semana Santa tournament has managed to become one of the most popular open tournaments in Spain in its relatively short ten-year history. Founded by the Club de Ajedrez Dama Negra under the leadership of Patricia Claros Aguilar, it quickly gained a reputation as a professionally organized event with a high level of competition. The tournament is traditionally held during "Semana Santa", allowing participants to combine sports with attending colorful Spanish festive processions.
Venue and infrastructure
The competition is hosted by the Nuevo Polideportivo (New Sports Centre) in San Vicente del Raspeig. It is a modern complex located next to the Alicante university campus.

Participants and stars
The tournament is divided into two main divisions: Group A (open to all) and Group B (for players with a rating below 1900).
Each year, the tournament attracts dozens of Grandmasters (GMs) and International Masters (IMs) from all over the world, from Spain and Ukraine to India and Latin America. In past years, the competition has featured such famous athletes as José Sánchez Negreiros and leading Spanish masters, making the tournament consistently ranked high on the world stage.
