From March 10-14, 2026, Uzbekistan will once again be at the epicenter of world chess attention. The fourth international tournament “Women’s Chess Championship” (official website uzchess.uz) promises to be the largest in the history of the event, confirming Buhara status as one of the chess capitals of the world.
Historical Background: From Local Start to Global Recognition
The tournament was founded in response to the rapid growth of interest in chess in Uzbekistan following the national team's historic victories on the international stage.
-
Evolution: If the first tournament had the status of a regional competition, the third one attracted representatives from more than 15 countries, including the leading chess schools of India, China, Georgia and Ukraine.
-
Succession: The tournament is being held in March to coincide with International Women's Day, which emphasizes the social mission of the event — empowering women in sports.
-
State support: According to the resolution of the President of Uzbekistan on the development of chess, this championship became part of the strategic plan for the training of future world champions.
Participant Lineup: Title Battle
It is expected that around 100 female chess players will participate in the tournament in 2026. The competition is divided into two groups:
Group A (Elita)
The title holders GM (Grandmaster), WGM (Women's Grandmaster) and IM (International Master) with a FIDE rating of over 2250 will compete here.
-
Geography: Traditionally strong delegations are expected from Georgia (Nona Gaprindashvili's school), Kazakhstan (world ranking leaders) and Azerbaijan.
-
Hosts of the field: Special attention will be paid to Uzbekistan's rising stars, such as Afruz Khamdamova and Nilufar Yakubbayeva, who have already proven their ability to defeat top opponents.
Group B (Future Stars)
Created for talented junior girls and FIDE masters. It is a training ground where young players get a chance to meet the standards of international titles, playing against experienced opponents.
Regulations and features of 2026
The tournament will be held according to the classic Swiss system in 9 rounds. Main technical parameters of the competition:
-
Time control: Players are given 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, after which 30 minutes are added until the end of the game. For each move made, an additional 30 seconds are added (starting from the first).
-
Prize Fund: According to preliminary data, the total fund will once again renew the historical maximum. Separate prizes are provided not only for prize places, but also for the best results among juniors and chess veterans.
-
Anti-cheating control: The strictest FIDE standards are applied, including broadcast delay and metal detectors, which guarantees absolute fairness of the game.
-
Broadcasting technologies: Thanks to the use of the latest generation electronic scoreboards, fans will be able to analyze each game in real time on the portal uzchess.uz.
Why should you follow this championship?
This tournament is not just a series of games. It is an indicator of how the balance of power in women's chess is changing. A victory in Tashkent often becomes a springboard for participation in the Candidates Tournament. In addition to the sports component, festival guests will be able to enjoy the spring holiday Navruz, which symbolizes renewal and the beginning of a new year, which is very symbolic for a chess holiday.
