With the arrival of spring, when Germany comes to life after the winter cold, Baden-Baden will once again become a magnet for thousands of chess players from all over the world. The Grenke Chess Open 2026 - one of the largest and most prestigious open chess tournaments in Europe - will open its doors, promising five days of intense competition, intellectual challenges and unforgettable emotions.
Historical Reference
The Grenke Chess Open has a relatively young but extremely rich history. Founded in 2016 with the support of the investment company GRENKE AG, the tournament quickly gained worldwide fame thanks to its excellent organization, large prize pool and the opportunity for players of all levels to meet the world chess elite at the board. It became the successor to the traditional Easter tournaments in Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden, combining their heritage with a modern approach.
Venue and infrastructure
The tournament is traditionally held in the famous Congress Center (Kongresshaus) of Baden-Baden.
-
Baden-Baden: This city is known for its thermal springs, luxurious spas and a rich history dating back to the Roman Empire. It has UNESCO World Heritage status and is one of the most elegant cities in Germany, offering not only chess but also an exquisite cultural program.
-
Infrastructure: The congress center is equipped with the latest technology, providing ideal conditions for competitions of this scale - spacious game rooms, relaxation areas, restaurants and cafes. Baden-Baden offers a wide selection of hotels, from budget to five-star, convenient transport connections and easy access to the picturesque nature of the Black Forest.
Participants and famous athletes
The Grenke Chess Open is famous for its huge scale. Thousands of participants are divided into several groups (Open A, Open B, Open C) by rating, which allows players of any level to find their place. Group A, of course, attracts the most attention, as dozens of grandmasters compete here. In past years, the tournament has hosted such stars as:
-
Magnus Carlsen: Former world champion, multiple tournament participant and winner.
-
Fabiano Caruana: One of the leading grandmasters of our time.
-
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave: Elite French grandmaster.
-
Richard Rapport: Known for his original style.
-
And, of course, strong German grandmasters competing for the title of German champion, which is often played in parallel.
Tournament Ranking and Prize Pool
The Grenke Chess Open is one of the highest-ranked open tournaments in the world in terms of the number of participants and the strength of the squad. A victory here is considered a significant achievement. The total prize fund is traditionally one of the largest among opens, reaching tens of thousands of euros, with separate prizes for different categories and age groups.
