Spain hosts the 20th ICCD World Championship for the Deaf
Results
From 6 to 15 May 2026, the coastal town of Roquetas de Mar (Almeria province, Spain) will become the world chess hub for hearing-impaired athletes. The 20th ICCD World Deaf Team Chess Championship is held under the auspices of the International Chess Committee for the Deaf (ICCD) with the support of FIDE.
This event is not just a competition, but a large-scale chess festival that brings together professionals and amateurs from all over the world.
🏆 Competition Program
The festival includes six main tournaments covering all game formats:

Classical Team Championship: The main event among men's, women's, junior and veteran teams.

World Team Rapid & Blitz: For the first time in ICCD history, team titles will be played in rapid formats.

Individual Blitz Championship: 8th World Individual Blitz Championship.

ICCD Open: Open tournaments (classic and rapid) for individual participants.
📅 Tournament schedule

May 6: Arrival of delegations and registration.

May 7: Opening ceremony and 1st round of the classics.

May 8–11: Main tours of the classic program.

May 12: Final round of the classics and team rapid.

May 13: Team and individual blitz.

May 14: 38th ICCD Congress and festive closing ceremony.

May 15: Departure of participants.
📍 Location and conditions
Roquetas de Mar is a famous resort in southern Spain. The organizers promise a barrier-free environment and a high level of professional refereeing.

Time control (classic): 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes until the end of the game with an additional 30 seconds for each move.

Requirements: Minimum hearing loss is 55 dB in the better ear. The use of hearing aids during the game is strictly prohibited to ensure a level playing field.
🌍 Event value
This championship is part of FIDE's strategy for inclusion ("Chess for Everyone"). More than 30 countries are expected to participate. Ukraine is traditionally one of the leaders in chess among people with hearing impairments, so our teams will be among the main contenders for medals.
