European Individual Chess Championship 2026

European Individual Chess Championship 2026

This tournament is the most prestigious individual competition on the continent, where not only the European champion title is at stake, but also tickets to the FIDE World Cup.

📅 Key dates and location

  • Dates: April 7 (arrival) — April 19 (departure) 2026.

  • Location: Katowice, Poland.

  • Location: International Congress Center (MCK). This is a modern glass building with a unique architecture ("green roof"), located in the "Culture Zone" next to the legendary Spodek Arena.

📜 History of European Championships

The European Individual Championships have only been held on a regular basis since 2000 (the first tournament was held in St. Vincent, Italy).

  • Ukrainian footprint: Ukraine is one of the most successful countries in the history of the tournament. Our champions:

    • Ruslan Ponomarev (2001)

    • Oleksandr Moiseenko (2013)

    • Anton Korobov (September 2018)

  • Polish context: Poland has already hosted the European Championship (for example, in 2013 in Legnica). For them, holding such an event in Katowice in 2026 is a confirmation of their status as one of the world's leading chess centers.

♟️ Participants and favorites

Over 500 participants from all member federations of the ECU (European Chess Union) are expected.

  1. Polish elite: Jan-Krzysztof Duda (the strongest Polish grandmaster), Radosław Wojtaszek.

  2. European tops: Players of the level of Vincent Kaymer (Germany), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (if he plays under the banner of the European leagues), as well as representatives of France, Romania and Azerbaijan.

  3. Ukrainian delegation: Traditionally strong lineup (Korobov, Volokitin, Kuzubov, Onishchuk). For Ukrainians, this is a "home" trip due to convenient logistics.
