Participation conditions and team composition

  • Participants (Qualification): The participating countries are members of the European Small Nations Association (ESNA). These include European countries with a population and chess community that meet the criteria for small nations (usually countries in FIDE Zone 1.10).

    • Examples of participating countries: Andorra, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Jersey, Guernsey, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino.

  • Team composition: The team consists of 4 main players and 1 substitute player (4+1).

  • Tournament Type: It is usually a Round Robin or Swiss System with 9 rounds, depending on the number of teams.

  • Time control: As a rule, classic time control (Standard) is used, similar to the European Team Championships.

Historical Background and Purpose

  • Purpose of creation: The Championship was established to provide small chess federations in Europe with a regular international team platform for competition, as they often have to compete against much larger and more resourceful federations at major European Championships and Olympiads.

  • History: The tournament is held regularly.

    • The previous 8th edition (2023) took place in Jersey (Great Britain), where the Andorra team became the champion.

  • Organization: The tournament is held as a separate event within the framework of the cooperation between ECU and ESNA, emphasizing support for the development of chess in all regions of Europe.
