The Republic of Malta, one of Europe's most renowned tourist destinations, will be the ideal venue to host the 2025 European Chess Championship in the U-1700, U-2000 and U-2300 categories. Combining over 7,000 years of history with a unique Mediterranean climate, Malta offers participants not only intense chess competition, but also an unforgettable vacation.

  • Tournament Location: The competition will be held at the Riviera Resort Spa and Conference Center.

  • Transport Connections: Malta is a popular destination with excellent connections:

    • Plane: Fly to Malta Airport (MLA), served by airlines such as Air Malta, Ryanair, EasyJet, Lufthansa, Aegean Airlines and Wizz Air.

    • Ferry: Ferry travel from Sicily is possible.

  • Recreation: The islands of Malta and Gozo offer golden and rocky beaches, many of which are awarded the Blue Flag for their exceptional water quality. The favorable climate allows you to enjoy the sea almost all year round.

  • Historical Heritage: Players will have the opportunity to see unique locations, including the oldest freestanding temples in the world, as well as fortifications left by the Phoenicians, Romans, Knights of St. John, Napoleon, and the British Empire.


Game System and Regulations

  • Format: The games will be played in 9 rounds according to the Swiss system with FIDE rating.

  • Categories: Separate championships will be held for the categories: under 2300, under 2000 and under 1700.

  • Time Control: The time limit for each player is 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game plus 30 seconds extra for each move played, starting from the first.

  • Women's Section: A separate championship for women in each category will be organized only if there are at least 10 entries. Otherwise, the women's discipline will be combined with the open (men's) section.

  • Prize Fund: The total prize fund is €4,600 EUR. The detailed distribution of funds is provided in section 10 of the event regulations.

  • Titles (Open/Men's Category):

    • The winner of each category receives the title "European Amateur Chess Champion U-1700, U-2000 and U-2300".

    • Gold, silver and bronze medal winners in the U-2300 category are eligible to receive the title FIDE Candidate Master (CM).

    • The gold medalist in the U-2000 category is eligible to receive the title FIDE Candidate Master (CM).

  • Titles (Women's Category):

    • The winner of each women's category receives the title "European Chess Champion among Women Amateurs U-1700, U-2000 and U-2300".

    • Gold, silver and bronze medalists in the women's U-2300 category are eligible to receive the title FIDE Candidate Women's Master (WCM).

    • The gold medalist in the women's U-2000 category is eligible to receive the title of FIDE Candidate Women's Master (WCM).

  • Qualification for the World Championship: The winners of each division (both open and women's) are provided with free accommodation and meals (in double rooms) at the following year's FIDE World Amateur Championship.
