Historical background

The World Youth Championship is one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the world. Its history began in 1974 with an unofficial "Cadet" championship for players under 17. Later, in 1977, it was officially recognized by FIDE as the World Cadet Championship, and the age limit was lowered to 16 years.

  • In 1979, the competition for the under 14 age category was launched.

  • In 1981, the first women's championship took place.

  • The under 18 age category was added in 1987.

  • In 2006, the under 8 category was added.

Subsequently, the tournament evolved, and today it includes several age groups (under 14, 16, and 18), competing separately in open and girls' sections.

Rules and format

  • System of competition: 11 rounds using the Swiss system.

  • Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, plus 30 minutes to the end of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from the first.

  • Participants: Each national federation can register one official player in each category (U14, U16, U18), totaling 6 players. In addition, players who took 1st-3rd places at the 2024 World Championship and gold medal winners of the last youth continental championships are eligible to participate.

  • Accommodation: Official players and one accompanying person from each federation who holds a FIDE coach license receive free accommodation and meals (in double rooms).

  • Prizes: The top three players in each category are awarded medals, and the top five are awarded cups, diplomas, and valuable prizes. Every participant will receive a commemorative gift.
