It was the capital of a powerful principality, and its history is closely connected with the name of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich, the hero of the "Lay of Igor's Campaign". The prince's campaign against the Polovtsy in 1185 forever immortalized the city in literature, making it a symbol of ancient Russian valor.
